By the time of its closure, the Integral Urban House was unable to generate sufficient funds from tours and classes. As of 2017, the house has since been converted back to a standard residential home. Despite being transformed into a normal residence, the Integral Urban House still retains much of its exterior appearance from the 1970s. The Integral Urban House was located at th St in Berkeley and consisted of two floors which were referred to as the ground floor and the main floor. The front of the house and the driveway faced east while the main entrance of the house was located on the south-facing wall of the ground floor. By June 1975, the Integral Urban House became open to the public for classes and tours, despite renovations not yet being completed.
This course looks at the idea and practice of community in cities and suburbs and at the dynamics of neighborhood and community formation. In addition to this method of composting, the Integral Urban House used a "Clivus Multrum" waterless toilet in the main floor bathroom with a separate composting tank located on the ground floor below. This tank was fed from both the toilet and from another chute in the nearby kitchen. Materials were gathered in the first of three sections of the tank, beginning to decompose through microbial action with the addition of sawdust, dried weeds, or leaves. In order to prevent odors, a ventilating chimney with a small fan would draw air through the roof and out of the house.

It becomes a challenge to make productive use of cool, shady, or otherwise “waste” spaces. Compost bins and dry-leaf storage areas may fit with the rabbits on the north side. A mat for sunbathing can share a wind-break in the corner of a sunny balcony with containers of tomatoes. Because of the small scale involved, you will discover a great many ingenious methods for modifying temperature, humidity, and wind that would require far too much labor and too many materials for the farmer. This course is designed to introduce students to the characteristics of urban transportation systems, the methods through which they are planned and analyzed, and the dimensions of key policy issues confronting decision makers.

In the late-1970s and early-’80s, the Integral Urban House no longer attracted sufficient public attention to supply volunteer labor or generate operating funds from visitor tours and classes. Countless hours of construction and management were supplied by unpaid architecture students, a situation that ultimately proved unsustainable.
Rather than confining someone to a slaughterhouse for eight hours a day as an occupation, you might better handle the job yourself. The principal reasons for raising small stock are to obtain high-quality protein for human consumption in the form of meat and eggs, and manure to use in composting and ultimately in the garden as fertilizer, as well as for pleasure or recreation. Additional benefits are obtaining rabbit pelts or wool , and the satisfaction of knowing that the meat you eat is relatively free of the pesticides and hormones frequently used in commercial livestock production. When visitors arrived at the Integral Urban House, they were greeted by the pleasant façade of a quaint, late-19th century Victorian house. A light peach-colored coating of paint provided homespun charm; white trim and accents conveyed the look of a clean, well-kept home.
The main floor also had a balcony above the front driveway looking east and a porch with a solar oven and container garden overlooking the backyard in the west. The ground floor also had an area to store vegetables and other crops grown at the house as well as an area to dry rabbit hides that were saved to make leather after rabbits in the backyard were consumed for their meat. More technologically ambitious projects included a composting toilet, the Swedish “Clivus Multrum,” installed below the house to produce nutrient-rich compost from human and vegetable waste through a carefully controlled process of aerobic decomposition. Solar collectors flanked the southern face of the house, absorbing energy to generate hot water and electricity. At the Berkeley Integral Urban House, preliminary experiments showed that fish would eat dead bees. To make this fact useful, a beehive was mounted over a pond so that when bees died they fell into the water and thus became a supplementary protein source for the animals within.

We have estimated that in a 15-mile-per-hour wind, the Savonius can cycle 1.5 gallons of water per minute through the filter. Though seemingly not a great amount of pumping power, eight hours of pumping will circulate nearly 750 gallons of water, or one-third of the pond’s volume, which is our optimum design consideration. The aquaculture system in the southwest corner of the Integral Urban House garden employs a unique device, called the Savonius Rotor, to prevent our pond from becoming stagnant and eutrophic.
Since we are assuming that the residents will be following more or less urban lifestyles, it is taken for granted that they will be earning all or the major portion of their cash income outside the home. The challenge of incorporating some home-scale food production into the normal work schedule is one we think can be met by overall design and planning of the systems and the adoption or invention of time-saving techniques. The major trains undergraduates for a variety of future careers and fields of graduate study that are related to urban studies and planning.
